Promoting Shows and Tours With Paid Ads: A City by City Playbook
How to use geo targeted ads to sell tickets and build local audiences across Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia, and how to measure what actually sold.

Selling a show is a different problem to selling a stream. The audience is finite, the deadline is fixed, and the buyer has to leave the house. Paid ads work well for live, but only if the structure respects those three facts.
Start With the Map, Not the Creative
Before a single ad runs, look at where your listeners already are. Spotify for Artists and Meta audience data will both tell you which cities over index for you.
Route the tour toward those cities where you can, and set expectations honestly where you cannot. Ads can amplify demand. They cannot invent it in a city with no listeners.
Geo Setup
- Use a radius around the venue, not the whole country. Twenty five to fifty kilometres works for most cities, wider for regional shows in Canada and Australia where people travel further.
- Exclude other tour cities from each campaign so you do not sell Manchester tickets to Londoners.
- Split every city into its own campaign or ad set so you can see which ones are working and move budget accordingly.
The Timing Windows
Ticket buying clusters. Spend accordingly.
- Announcement week: broad reach in the city, aimed at your existing listeners there. This is the cheapest ticket you will ever sell.
- The quiet middle: low, steady spend on retargeting only. Do not burn budget on cold traffic here.
- Final two weeks: the biggest push. This is when casual buyers decide.
- Final 72 hours: urgency creative, retargeting only, highest daily budget of the run.
Roughly half of the budget belongs in the last two weeks.
Creative That Sells Live
Live content beats studio content for ticket campaigns almost every time.
- Vertical footage from an actual show, crowd audible.
- The city name on screen. Specificity converts.
- Date and venue readable in the first three seconds.
- A short clip of the song people in that market stream most.
- Urgency only when it is true. Fake scarcity damages trust with a local audience you will come back to.
Retarget the People Who Already Listen
Your strongest ticket audience is people who stream you in that city.
Build audiences from:
- Landing page visitors from that market
- Video viewers over 50 percent
- Your email list segmented by city
- Ticket page visitors who did not check out
The last one is usually the highest converting audience in the whole campaign.
Measurement
Put your pixel where the buying happens, or as close as the ticketing platform allows.
- If the ticketing partner supports it, add your pixel to the checkout flow.
- If it does not, route ads through your own landing page first so you at least measure intent and can retarget.
- Track cost per ticket page view as your working metric when checkout data is unavailable.
- Compare against the actual sales report at the end of each week and adjust.
Market Notes
- Canada: long distances mean wider radii and earlier announcement windows outside the main metros.
- United Kingdom: dense routing, so city exclusions matter more than anywhere else.
- Germany: strong regional identity between cities. Localise creative per city where you can, and test German language captions.
- Australia: fewer, larger markets and a long lead time. Announce earlier than you would in Europe.
Common Mistakes
- One national campaign for a multi city tour
- All budget spent at announcement, nothing left for the final fortnight
- Studio press photos instead of live footage
- No pixel anywhere near the ticket link, so nothing is measurable
Frequently Asked Questions
How much of a tour budget should go to ads?
Enough to cover the cities that are not selling on their own. Spending evenly across a tour usually wastes money on the shows that were always going to sell.
Can ads sell out a show in a city with no listeners?
Rarely, and never efficiently. Build the audience there first with streaming campaigns, then tour it.
When should ticket ads start?
At announcement, then again hard in the final two weeks. The middle stretch is for retargeting only.
What is the best metric if the ticketing platform gives no data?
Cost per ticket page view, checked weekly against the actual sales report.
